CIDESI​

To improve the quality of nursing education and care, through the research and development of Nursing Information Systems and the support of ICNP^© development, in collaboration with ICN.

CIDESI-ESEP operates within the mission and objectives of the Porto Nursing School (ESEP), in direct cooperation with Ordem dos Enfermeiros (OE – National Nurses Association) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN).

For over 20 years, we have been committed to the research and development of Nursing Information Systems (NIS) in Portugal, addressing nursing education and professional practice.

This center is located at ESEP main building, and currently includes 14 professors (all nurses with different specializations and most with a doctorate in nursing) and two engineers. It also includes eight doctoral students in nursing, who are developing their projects allocated to the center.

CIDESI-ESEP collaborates directly with other centers accredited by ICN and different international nursing organizations (namely from countries such as Norway, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Turkey and Australia).

In recent years, and after analysing the national data available from the use of SClinico™, performed daily by more than 90% of Portuguese nurses, CIDESI-ESEP has evolved towards the development of a Portuguese nursing ontology (NursingOntos^©).

This new approach in NIS was developed in collaboration with OE, with the objective of representing nursing knowledge in a multilingual ontology, in which the concepts (data, diagnoses and interventions) and the relationships between them are specified.

We have also developed an online platform for nursing care conception (e4nursing^© – based on the structure and content of NursingOntos^©) implemented in all ESEP nursing courses.
