Master in Midwifery Nursing

The Master’s Degree in Midwifery Nursing, published in the Diário da República No. 192 of 1 October 2021, is part of the post-graduate training policy of the Nursing School of Porto. The course aims to respond to current challenges in terms of teaching, clinical practice and research, contributing to a more meaningful Nursing for people.

The Master in Midwifery Nursing has three guidelines:

1. To align with the guidelines of the Ordem dos Enfermeiros (Portuguese Nurses Order) for the attribution of the professional title of Specialist Nurse in Midwifery: the course considers, in its conception, the Formative Plan of the Order of Nurses for specialized training in Midwifery, namely regarding the requirements and principles of analysis of the specialized training in Nursing, of the Order of Nurses (OE) for granting the professional title of Nurse Specialist in Midwifery.

2. To commit with ESEP’s tradition in the training of Midwifery nurses: it is intended to prepare nurses who show mastery in terms of knowledge, skills and capacity for innovation – essential for the excellence of care, through training within the frame of specialized care in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing focused on: 1) professional competence; 2) on evidence based practice; and, 3) on the respect for the client(s) of care, in what their bodily and psychological processes, actions and health project(s) are (PQCEESMO, 2021).

3. Lifelong learning orientation: based current realities – knowledge society, economic trends, globalization of information, demographic evolution and family structures, innovations in clinical contexts, health policies, multiprofessional teams, new technologies and the impact of their use, etc. – each citizen, and also each nurse, needs to develop resources and strategies to take advantage of these opportunities and contribute to the development of Nursing as a discipline and profession.

Learning outcomes

• To know the evaluation data, identify diagnoses and implement interventions in the scope of sexual and reproductive health; adaptation to pregnancy; childbearing and preparation for childbirth; postpartum recovery and newborn health.
• To perform interventions focused on diagnoses related to pregnant/couple and family during pregnancy, labour and puerperium, neonatal period and women with gynaecological disorders.
• To know the complications of pregnancy, fetal development, labour and postpartum and relate them to interventions resulting from prescription.
• To develop professional, ethnical and deontological awareness that promotes an innovative specialized intervention, based on critical analysis, understanding and systematization of complex realities and multidisciplinary team work.
