Introduction to digital technologies in nursing education

Nursing education is governed by high quality and safety standards, challenging teachers to innovate and modernise pedagogical strategies. The introduction of digital technologies in nursing education will improve the development of clinical reasoning skills, which is a key element for the quality of autonomous decision-making in nursing.

The need to ensure high quality and safety standards in nursing care, associated with ethical and legal restrictions of clinical training with patients, boosts the need for innovative technologies that enable the development of learning processes that empower students’ clinical decision-making. Existing simulators, even the high-fidelity ones, are still not very dynamic, revealing gaps in the training of clinical reasoning due to the limitations of the repertoire of clinical scenarios available to them.

Our purpose is to contribute to the development of a repertoire of clinical scenarios (the foundation of knowledge) that support the development of a digital simulator, supported by a dynamic physiological algorithm – Body InteractTM, which contributes to the improvement of students’ clinical reasoning learning in the curricular units of body responses to disease (I and II) of a nursing degree course in Portugal.

Objectives
  • To develop 30 clinical decision trees in nursing/clinical cases (the foundation of knowledge) that support the inclusion in a digital simulator, supported by a dynamic physiological algorithm – Body InteractTM;
  • To provide nursing students with a tool for the simulation and training of clinical reasoning in nursing that improves the quality and safety of decision-making in clinical situations;
  • To provide a tool for training and learning clinical reasoning in nursing in a web environment;
  • To provide a repertoire of clinical reasoning experiences that ensure the quality and safety of the nursing decision in common or uncommon health conditions;
  • To provide students with the same opportunities to develop clinical reasoning and assessment skills;
  • To ensure high quality and safety standards in the decision and clinical reasoning of nursing students before and during clinical experiences;
  • To provide a tool in a classroom environment (digital simulator – interactive table) that complements the development of students’ cognitive skills;
  • To ensure high quality and safety standards in the decision and clinical reasoning of nursing students before and during clinical experiences.
