Post-graduate course in Palliative Care Nursing

The Post-graduate Course in Palliative Care Nursing is designed for nursing professionals who want to increase their knowledge and skills in caring for people with incurable and end-of-life illnesses, in line with the guidelines of the Portuguese Order of Nurses for the development of competencies in this area of care.

The course covers some of the structural areas of palliative care, namely the identification of the needs of the patient and family in the context of diagnosis and intervention arising from bodily and psychological responses, adaptive strategies for accompanying family carers, supportive and therapeutic interventions in palliative care, measures of comfort and well-being at the end-of-life, intervention in loss, grief, and bereavement.

Learning outcomes

  • Knowing the philosophy, organization and resources that ensure palliative care delivery;
  • Developing knowledge and capacities of professional response in the field of identification and intervention in the bodily, psychological and adaptive impairments of the person and family in palliative situation;
  • Knowing the indicators of family adaptive processes enabling to provide support to the family for the role of family caregiver;
  • To enable the diagnosis and intervention in the adaptive processes inherent to loss and mourning in palliative situation.
