Mobility Program
Theoretical classes
The 1st and 2nd year classes of the Undergraduate Degree in Nursing are only lectured in Portuguese.
Clinical practice
3rd and 4rd year of the Undergraduate Degree in Nursing
During clinical practice students must evidence:
Theoretical knowledge; Incorporating knowledge into practice; Workflow management planning; Setting nursing care priorities; Ethical and deontological reasoning; Reflexive and critical reasoning; Efficiently incorporate knowledge and deliver information; Technical skills; Therapeutic interaction with patient and relatives; Respect and responsibility; Stress management; Initiative, interest in learning, flexibility, punctuality, perseverance.
Clinical practice monitoring and evaluation
According to ESEP Regulation, during clinical practice, students act under teacher and nurse tutor supervision. Teacher and tutor can set up meetings to monitor student’s achievements and discuss aspects in need of improvement.
The teacher from ESEP is responsible for the student’s final grade.
The Coordinator of the curricular unit will issue a declaratuon at the end of the mobility period, no later than 3 weeks, based on the national grading system (0-20) and the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).
The final grade of each curricular unit must be equal to or higher than tem points for student to get approval.
ESEP will release the final grade at the end of each semester (February or July).
Clinical practice timetable
Clinical practice may take place in a hospital or healthcare centre; The students’ timetable can vary according to clinical practice location; Healthcare centres are open from 08:00 to 20:00, Monday to Friday; Hospitals are open 24 hours, seven days a week; At healthcare centres, students may engage on a day shift (08:00–15:00) or late shift (13:00–20:00); at hospitals students may undertake morning, late or night shifts; Usually students engage on a 35 hours per week timetable.
Absenteeism
Students are not allowed to attend clinical practice whenever suffering from a health condition, illness or other health issue.
According to General Regulation of Attendance and Evaluation, for each course, considering the full timetable, students can register: a maximum of 25% absenteeism for the theoretical component and a maximum of 15% absenteeism for clinical practice.
Student conduct and responsabilities
Respect the Portuguese law, the cultural values, the rules and regulations of host institutions.
Observe the conduct codes under the supervision of the tutor and not accept further responsabilities or take any action without the tutor’s consent.
Discuss and clarify any doubts on practice with tutors and teachers. The international coordinator may also advise.
Keep regular contacts with the international coordinator during the mobility period and on vacantions, during your stay in Portugal.
In all curricular units, students are expected to acquire knowledge, skills and abilities to develop nurses’ competencies for professional practice, within the Portuguese health care system (Hospital and Primary Health Care).
Note: Students will not undertake study or traineeship periods similar to the ones offered by their home institutions.
Details on clinical practice: The clinical practice in hospital setiings or health centres focuses on the development of the Portuguese nurses’ competencies, involving primary and hospital health care delivery. Additionally, a professional awareness is also promoted, empowering students to actively intervene within the framework of the nursing profession, alongside with patients, colleagues isntitutions, communities and society.
Uniforms
For clinical practice students must wear appropriate clothing. At healthcare centres students wear nursing scrubs and at hospitals students wear uniforms from their home institution.
Regardless location, students are required to carry an ESEP identification card.
Helping with your studies
ESEP libraries comprise a wide set, yet limited, of English publications.
A free wireless service enables access to further needed information, in all ESEP buildings.
Before mobility ends
Last week prior to completion of the mobility period
Before you return to your home country, you will meet with the international coordinator and share your mobility experiences.
You will also be asked to fill a document concerning your mobility experience.
You should also consider sending some pictures of your experience abroad to be part of the Erasmus+ ESEP album.
